In the world of comedy, understanding how to transform a simple scene into a comedic masterpiece is essential for any writer looking to make a lasting impact. This workshop will delve into the vital techniques that define successful comedic storytelling, empowering participants to craft engaging narratives that resonate with audiences.

🧑‍🎤 Character Development: Create relatable yet exaggerated characters, drawing inspiration from real-life observations to understand how their traits can lead to comedic moments.

🎭 Crafting Comedic Scenarios: Brainstorm and pitch comedic scenarios, working together to transform a simple plot point into a humorous scene.

🤸 Visual Comedy and Physicality: Discover how to incorporate visual gags and physical comedy into your scenes, amplifying humour through action and movement.

🔄 Refine and Feedback: Present your developed scenes and receive constructive feedback to refine your comedic storytelling and performance skills.

 

  • Carys Thomas is a writer and creative from Cardiff, living and working in London. She began screenwriting in 2020 and since then have been named as a 2024 BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing winner and selected to be part of the first All3Media Edinburgh Television Festival New Writer’s Collective. She has also been shortlisted and reached the top 1% of the BBC Writer’s Room Open Call, featured in Philip Shelley’s script library, and have written and directed short films that have screened at festivals worldwide such as the Portland Comedy Film Festival. As well as being published in Popshot and she is currently part of the Curtis Brown Creative novel-writing cohort for 2024, and represented by Independent Talent with a comedy series under option.

    CAPACITY
    We have a limited number of concession tickets available on a first-come-first-serve basis. If you identify as working class, are currently on benefits, or if you consider yourself to be financially disadvantaged in a way that is hindering your progression in your career, these tickets are available to you.

    WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
    Underscore Studios is unfunded and comprised of three volunteers. We believe that upskilling yourself should be affordable, engaging, and transparent. The money towards Workshops such as these means that we can keep them as low as they are, pay our Freelance Workshop leaders, support the organisation to be sustainable, and when we can, make more of our services available for Free.
