Directing Documentary Films for Broadcast, Online or Theatrical Release.

Unveil the art of directing impactful documentaries in this immersive workshop designed for aspiring filmmakers.

Paul Sng - DISPOSSESSION, POLY STYRENE: I AM A CLICHE (winner of BIFA 2021 Best Documentary, BIFA 2021 Raindance Discovery Award) and TISH (Sheffield DocFest 2023 Opening Gala film) is joining us for the first time to lead this training event.

What we'll learn:

Effective Interview Techniques: Learn the art of conducting interviews that capture authentic stories.

Crafting a Documentary Pitch: Discover strategies for presenting your documentary in a compelling pitch to attract funding, finance and distribution

Structuring Your Documentary: Explore the nuances and commonalities between documentary storytelling and scripted narrative.

Navigating Post-Production and beyond: Gain insights into the practical aspects of completing your documentary, including budgeting, marketing, distribution strategies, and navigating the festival circuit.

  • Paul Sng is a bi-racial British Chinese filmmaker based in Edinburgh, Scotland whose work focuses on people who challenge the status quo.

    His films have been broadcast on television and screened internationally, and his feature documentary credits include DISPOSSESSION, POLY STYRENE: I AM A CLICHE (winner of BIFA 2021 Best Documentary, BIFA 2021 Raindance Discovery Award) and TISH (Sheffield DocFest 2023 Opening Gala film).

    He has directed two short drama films, FOLDING (featuring Joseph Marcell and Shin-Fei Chen) and ASKA (featuring Jenny Ryan and Kate Dickie). He was named as a BAFTA Breakthrough Artist 2022/23.

    CAPACITY
    We have a limited number of concession tickets available on a first-come-first-serve basis. If you identify as working class, are currently on benefits, or if you consider yourself to be financially disadvantaged in a way that is hindering your progression in your career, these tickets are available to you.

    WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
    Underscore Studios is unfunded and comprised of three volunteers. We believe that upskilling yourself should be affordable, engaging, and transparent. The money towards Workshops such as these means that we can keep them as low as they are, pay our Freelance Workshop leaders, support the organisation to be sustainable, and when we can, make more of our services available for Free.
