Building a Visual Language Around a Script

from £14.00

Building a Visual Language Around a Script

Create a visual treatment that communicates your film to producers, cinematographers, collaborators and potential funders.

This workshop will take place over Zoom in 2027. Date and time to be confirmed.

Welcoming Aram Atkinson!

–

Can you communicate what your film should look and feel like before a single frame has been shot?

In this practical workshop, writer-director Aram Atkinson will explore how to translate the ideas on the page into a clear, cohesive visual language. Through the process of building a visual treatment, you’ll learn how images, colour, composition, lighting, movement and atmosphere can help communicate the world of your film.

Aram’s work spans narrative filmmaking, cinematography and education. His short film Green Grass, supported by BFI NETWORK, explores themes of Deaf identity and sustainability. Alongside his filmmaking practice, Aram teaches emerging filmmakers and has developed a strong focus on helping others understand and communicate their creative vision.

This session is about making deliberate visual choices, understanding what those choices say about your story, and bringing them together to help other people see the film you want to make.

Workshop Focus:

✅ Reading for Visual Potential – Identifying the images, moods, environments and cinematic possibilities already present in your script

✅ Building Your Visual Language – Exploring how colour, composition, lighting, camera movement and atmosphere can express the tone and world of your film

✅ Creating a Cohesive Treatment – Bringing your references and creative decisions together into a visual document with a clear point of view

✅ Communicating Your Vision – Understanding how a visual treatment can help producers, cinematographers, collaborators and potential funders connect with your project

Perfect for writers, directors and emerging filmmakers who want to develop the visual identity of a project, communicate their intentions more clearly and prepare their script for conversations with potential collaborators.
