Outline and Application Guidance
The Underscore ScriptLab outline:
Empowering working-class writers/filmmakers to bring their short film projects to life.
The Underscore Scriptlab is a fully funded initiative made possible with the support of BFI NETWORK, awarding funds from The National Lottery.
It takes place over Zoom across 5 months from August 2023 (exact date tbc) to December 2023 and is a program aimed at supporting working-class writers/filmmakers in their pursuit of excellence in screenwriting and storytelling. The Lab is designed to provide a nurturing and empowering environment for selected participants to develop their short film projects with an experienced script developer and prepare for future opportunities in the film industry. By focusing on working-class talent, we aim to create a platform that showcases authentic stories, fostering inclusivity and representation within the industry.
Program Details:
Duration: The ScriptLab will run from August to December, spanning five months of dedicated support and mentorship.
Expert Guidance:
Acclaimed script developer Dhiraj Mahey will work closely with the chosen cohort, providing personalised guidance, feedback, and support throughout the program with each writer receiving 2 hours: 1-hour meeting and 1-hour prep/follow-up.
Development Focus:
Participants will receive valuable feedback on two drafts of their script and supporting prose document, ensuring their short film projects reach their full potential.
Target Filmmakers:
We are seeking FOUR working-class writers/filmmakers who have already embarked on their creative journey and have some experience in the screen industry, whether that be work that has been produced or any involvement in script-writing competitions or the like. We are keen to hear from those who have perhaps moved across to the screen sector from other disciplines. This particular program is not aimed at beginners. More details on how we are describing the term working class can be found on our homepage.
Impact:
The ScriptLab seeks to make a meaningful impact on the careers of its participants. By offering dedicated time, expert guidance, and a supportive community, we aim to equip working-class writers/filmmakers with the necessary skills, confidence, and industry knowledge to excel in their craft.
Support and Collaboration:
Underscore Studios is committed to providing ongoing support to participants beyond the ScriptLab program. We understand the value of collaboration and networking in the film industry. As such, we offer our assistance in connecting participants with potential collaborators and growing their professional network.
